Fly Fishing Gear

Fly Rods

For fly fishing enthusiasts targeting redfish or trout, we recommend using an 8 or 9wt rod for optimal performance. If you're for tarpon, consider stepping up to an 11wt or 12wt rod for the best results. Sage is a fantastic brand known for its quality and in the field. Happy fishing!

Fly Reels

When fly fishing for redfish or trout, we recommend using an 8wt or 9wt reel for the best. For tarpon, an 11wt or 12wt reel is ideal to handle these powerful fish. Sage is a great brand known for its reliability and performance on the water. Enjoy your fishing adventures!

Fly Line and Tippet

To catch redfish, you should use a 9- to 10-foot leader with a 50-pound butt section tapered to a 20-pound class tippet. You can add a foot of 30-pound fluorocarbon as shock tippet for insurance. An intermediate line can be helpful in water deeper than 4 feet. Most guides recommend a 9-foot, 8- or 9-weight rod paired with a warm-water, weight-forward floating line. Leaders can measure 9 to 12 feet, with a 40-pound butt section tapering to a 15- or 20-pound tippet.

Flies

Redfish/Trout

  • Merkins and Clousers: Effective for targeting redfish in shallow waters.

  • Spoofers: Useful for catching redfish and trout.

  • Shrimp and Crab Flies: Commonly used for redfish, especially in shallow flats.

  • Gurglers: Effective when fish are active.
These flies are well-suited for the shallow, clear waters of the Laguna Madre, making it a prime location for fly fishing.

Tarpon

  • Flyline: Use Cortland's New Liquid Crystal in the Clear Tarpon Taper floating line for a clear floaters.

  • Tippet: Opt for shock tippet or straight 80-pound fluorocarbon for better performance.

  • Leader: Build a 11-12 foot system for smaller fish, and consider using a mostly mono leader with a fluorocarbon bite tippet for a compromise.

  • Tippet Size: Tippet size should match the line class, typically ranging from 2 to 20 pounds.
